2004 Interagency Conference on Metabolic Engineering

NSF Room 375

Friday, February 6, 2004

Outline for Panel Session:

The session will be organized as a Roundtable. Each panelist will be given five minutes to summarize their views of the impact of their work.  They have been asked to use the last part of their morning presentation as a segue into their discussion for the afternoon session.  After the brief formal statements, the panelists will elaborate on their views during the Roundtable to follow.

Thus, for the panel, we want each speaker to consider how their work fits within the current rubric of ME. They are being asked to relate their work to that of other speakers, especially if there are common themes that all address. We also are interested in knowing where the discipline is moving. What topics are hot now and what areas are of interest on the horizon?

Specifically, the following topics have been suggested to them for discussion during the Roundtable:

What direction is ME research moving short and long term? How does (the panelist's) research fit in this flow?

What societal issues is ME research currently addressing? What issues is it likely to address in the future? Again, how does (the panelist’s) research fit in?

Are there common themes illustrated in the work described at the conference?  Are there commonalities among the other work supported by MEWG that the speakers are aware of?

Given the answers to these questions, what research emphasis does the panelist feel MEWG should give in future announcements of opportunity?
