We wish to present to you Proceedings from the Inter-Agency Workshop on Metabolic Engineering held at the National Science Foundation on May31, 2000.

The Workshop was a combination of a Grantees Conference in the morning, and a Workshop in the afternoon to discuss future research support of Metabolic Engineering. The hard copy version of this report has abstracts from each of the Grantees presentations in the morning as well as a summary of the afternoon Workshop. The electronic version of this report, which is available at:

has slide information from each of the Grantee presentations as well as slide information from the afternoon presentations.

Both versions of this report have additional information relevant to the activities of the MetabolicEngineering Working Group (MEWG).

It is anticipated that there will be another Inter-Agency Workshop similar to the one presented here. For current information on the activities of the MEWG, please refer to the MEWG web-site shown above.
